Green Architecture Cell (GrACe), Department of Architecture (DoA), BUET organised another ‘TWO-DAY WORKSHOP ON NATURAL VENTILATION: Natural ventilation Techniques to Ensure Health and Comfort in Buildings’ from 22 -23 December, 2016 at Dept. of Architecture, BUET. Different professional groups e.g. Architects, Designers, Mechanical Engineers, Researchers and Academicians actively participated in the event. The aim of the workshop was to provide participants with a good understanding of how to apply rules of thumb and simulation tools to assess natural ventilation of indoor spaces with respect to national (i.e. BNBC) and international (e.g. BREEAM and LEED) codes and standards and to recommend design strategies to incorporate natural ventilation satisfying both aesthetic and technical requirements. During workshop, participants correlated simulation performance results with in-situ measured performance in the dept. classroom, and were able to identify best possible option for passive design from alternatives.

This workshop was part of on-going activities of the Green Architecture Cell (GrACe), DoA, BUET which started its journey in June 2009, as a research outcome of a project on Promoting Green Architecture in Bangladesh, conducted by the DoA, BUET, and GIZ of Germany. GrACe aims to promote the green architecture concept, by way of advocacy, training, design and research in Bangladesh. This is an open forum for architects, engineers, developers, civil society members, academics, researchers, students, stakeholders and individuals interested in green architecture in the Tropics. Information of previous events of GrACe are available at and official Facebook page: /groups/ 1701921056798493/

The Workshop Instructors were: Prof Dr. Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed, Head of the Dept. of Architecture, BUET and specializes in Bioclimatic Urban Design and low energy buildings for the Tropics; and Abu Taib Mohammed Shahjahan, Assistant Professor at Dept. of Architecture, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) and worked as a professional Urban Designer in UAE and Bangladesh. Certificates for Completion of the Workshop were awarded by Dr Md Ashikur Rahman Joarder, Coordinator of GrACe, DoA, BUET.
